CONTENT TO HELP SUPPORT WAYS TO CARE FOR SELF/WELLNESS

-SPEND TIME IN NATURE-
Research shows that just 10-20 minutes outside per day can boost our immune system and help settle our nervous system- aiding in benefit to both our physical and emotional health~ Maybe take this time to be in your garden, take a walk or hike, listen to bird songs, watch the waves, spend time with the new buds that are arising in the flowers as spring is moving forward.
-LIMIT CONSUMPTION OF MEDIA-
I would encourage you to find resources that are clear and informative regarding ways to manage COVID-19. The best resource right now is the World Health Organization (WHO)- you may want to subscribe to them on Facebook or visit their website for information. https://www.who.int
I would suggest that you stay informed- maybe only 1 hour or less per day spent on updates
-CONSUME INFORMATION/MEDIA THAT UPLIFTS YOU-
Read, watch, listen, scroll to inspiring and uplifting stories and content. In a time when the information that we are getting is so intense it is important to balance what type of other information we take in. Listen to your favorite songs/artists, watch funny movies (maybe even a christmas movie- as those can bring good feelings on :), read books that inspire you, get you lost in a great story, etc. Take care of your mind to support your well being.
-JOURNAL/WRITE-
This can be a great time to get out onto paper the things that are on your mind- it can be helpful to have out in front of you what your mind is trying to work with, and then reflect and provide yourself with supportive ways to deal with what is challenging you. Also, be willing to write the things you are traversing and how you are getting through them in this time of COVID-19. Looking back at a point in the future may be helpful to see how you’ve coped and resourced yourself in these challenging times.
-PICK A PROJECT-
Given we have more time in our home environments this is a wonderful time to take on a project you may have not had time for in the past. Cleaning out or organizing some part of the house may feel helpful to manage the stress and allow you to feel more containment and support from your home environment. Consider what might need your attention, getting rid of clothes you dont wear in the closet, organizing the garage or a closet you never go in, creating something in the garden, or straightening up an office or bedroom.
-MEDITATION-
Mindfulness allows us to meet the conditions of our life with more ease and resilience. Since we are spending more time at home and less consumed by other activities we might normally be pulled to this is a wonderful time to commit to supporting yourself with meditation. Just 5-10 minutes per day of practice can help you to alleviate stress and worry and give you a place to feel grounded and connected to yourself in and amidst these stressful times. Build up over the next few weeks to a minimum of 20 minutes a day- this has been found to be an effective amount to help change immune system, increase mental health and brain functioning.
-ACTS OF KINDNESS-
In closing, I am hopeful that this experience with COVID-19 brings us closer together to realize how interconnected we are and how we can turn to each other for support. We are all in this together- no lines of any distinction separate who may be affected by this pandemic. I encourage you to practice kindness, care, connection with those you are in contact with and maybe take more time to offer listening and support. Consider checking in with social distancing or a phone call to a neighbor asking if they need anything (even if its just to chat and offer an ear of listening), call friends you haven’t connected with in some time- just to say hi, thank people you come in contact with who are working to help us through this time (grocery store workers, medical community, delivery drivers), call and chat with family that you typically might only connect to once a year. Most importantly do your part right now by practicing social (physical) distancing and staying home as much as possible is a radical act of support to our communities- both locally, in the country and globally. Act with responsability to help us ALL get through this. We are all in this together.
