And it can also be one of the most challenging and stressful roles we experiences in our lives. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
This 8-week course, originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, is designed to help participants discover and utilize their own inner resources for bringing balance, health, and peace of mind to their lives through the practice of mindfulness.
During the past 30 years, over 18,000 people have taken this course at UMass Medical School and thousands more have participated at hospitals, clinics and educational centers around the world. The course has been the subject of many clinical studies for people grappling with conditions such as stress, cancer, heart disease, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, drug and alcohol addiction, sleep disorders, and more.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is based on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) eight-week program, developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. MBSR is enormously empowering for patients with chronic pain, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, and gastrointestinal disorders, as well as for psychological problems such as anxiety and panic.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy grew from this work. Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale adapted the MBSR program so it could be used specifically for people who had suffered repeated bouts of depression in their lives.
Mindfulness-Based Eating
Mindfulness-Based Eating is offered in a four-week class session format. Each class is approximately 2 hours in length and is designed to deepen the practice of mindfulness through the experience of eating.
The practice of present moment awareness (mindfulness) is at heart of all aspects of healthy living, as it allows us to see clearly into the choices we make, the emotional reactions we have and the things that are most important to us. Because of the universal nature of mindfulness, while this course is focused upon food, eating and weight, the skills gained will apply to all aspects of life, including relationships, work, and physical health.
